In a Celebration of Life after someone has died, most people miss something. You’ve undoubtedly been to one. It’s where most people come to celebrate the life and impact of the friend or loved one who has left their body. However, there is much more to be celebrated, that most people are unaware of.

Death creates a community, a spontaneous community of people, many of whom are often previously unknown to each other. Yet they are gathered together in this moment, all linked through association with the departed person.

To understand just how special an event like this is, it is necessary to recognize that, like all of us, you are on a journey through your life to discover more of who you are and realize all that you can become. You are guided in this journey by your inner Knowing, something many call your Soul. The people that you meet are a key part of the process. Especially those you have a relationship with . . . those you resonate with. Close friends in particular.  “Resonance” means, something in each of you is being reflected back to the other.

In the event of a Celebration of Life, this means each of the friends who have gathered to honour the departed person, carry within them some aspect of that person with whom you also have a resonance.

Imagine this being said at a time of grieving for someone:

“You who are gathered here to honour your departed loved one are part of a unique community. Each of you are an extension of her.  Each of you carries an element of her within you: what connected you; how she touched or shaped your life.  That touch was possible because a part of her resonated with you. More clearly—something that was in her that attracted you to her, is also in you..

So look again at others gathered here, both those you know and those you have not yet met, and know that in this way, together, in each of us, we carry an essence of this loved soul within us.  It is, in a sense, her lasting gift to each of you. I invite you to take this opportunity to meet and share with each other knowing she is also present in you; that in some way, whatever you appreciated in her is also present in each of the others gathered around you here.

Let this Celebration be a recognition that her gift is how she called that forward in you, as you did in her. Take the opportunity to share that gift with others here . . . and that will also be our a gift to her, wherever she may be.
